Would I be going too far to presume that as women it is hard to give ourselves some personal time? Maybe. Maybe some women really don't have any difficulty justifying taking time for themselves...frequently. In the past year, I've found myself feeling bogged down, overwhelmed by ideas and interests..causing me to freeze as if I've been check-mated, not knowing what I should do and therefore feeling as if I can't do anything. Gah.

Also, as a "creative" person, does anyone else feel so much pressure to be "creative"? Maybe it's self-imposed, but everywhere I turn, I have this desire to create, make, change, visualize...sometimes it is too much. I realize this is totally a 1st world problem...oh woa is me, to have too much desire to create. Wah. All this build up is just to proclaim that this year...2012...is my year. It's my year to do things, make things, be something more. Invest in becoming my own source of inspiration. Pinterest, be damned...I will not let myself be overwhelmed by ideas - I'll allow myself to take hold of the things that interest me, and complete them. No matter if that means the laundry doesn't get done on Sunday. We'll see how this goes.

Does anyone else have issues with those Victoria Secret commercials? Girls that look about, oh, I don't know...16, rolling around, with pouted lips and wearing pretty much nothing. I'm sure the guys like it. But whatev's - to each their own. I would rather buy pretty under-thingies, made by a company that I don't feel bad supporting with my money. In rolls etsy. Yet again. Did I mention I love etsy? I'm sure about a thousand times.

NaomiLingerie is an etsy store that specializes in innocent and beautiful handmade garments. I can't get over their romantic panties and shorts and their girly camisoles and slips.

And - realistically...I sleep in an old, high school t-shirt at night. Yep. Keeping the magic alive.

'crochet' looks like crocket

Just recently, I've been really wanting to learn how to crochet. I remember, only a few years ago being completely uninterested in the art, thinking it was outdated and tacky. Yep - and I've proven again how often and quickly I can change my mind. Who doesn't love those granny-chic crocheted blankets? I vividly remember one my mom had growing up - black with brightly colored flowers all over it - I really really want that one (mom...are you reading this?). BTW - how adorable is this little munchkin up top? Look at her little hat. Ok, it's settled, yet another craft I will start - and maybe finish. How do you crochet anyway? I know there's needles involved and hooking...or something.

Chocolate Butterbean is a small company with a big, Southern, heart. Joni Lay, owner, designer, and sweetheart, is the brain behind all things Chocolate Butterbean. I recommended her to a couple of close family friends for their wedding invitations, and they couldn't have come out any more perfect (see the finished product below).

Reasons I love Chocolate Butterbean...

a. I like the owner. She's an Industrial Designer willing to branch out and do her own thing...awesome.

b. I LOVE the signs she designs and makes...yes people, she paints these things...incredible.

c. She's an Atlanta designer and entrepreneur. Love to support local.

Balance is good.

pumpkin muffins/cupcakes

Smitten Kitchen is one of my first stops for any recipe that I need to make. Usually, I have something in mind for an occasion and, 9 times out of 10, I can find a comparable recipe on her site with good feedback, modifications, and, most importantly, awesome photography. I am one of those people that really can't commit to recipe-follow-through if there isn't a good picture of what the end product is supposed to be.

After visiting with wonderful friends for dinner, I decided I needed to make something pumpkin-y for a birthday at the office the next day. Seriously - I went to the grocery store at 8:45pm - got $4 worth of ingredients, and by 9:45pm I had a dozen of these fabulously moist pumpkin muffins. There is just no excuse! Go make these now! Now. do it.

Her recipe online doesn't call for icing, but I did...cream cheese icing. Then I sprinkled cinnamon on top. That's when these muffins became cupcakes. In some of the comments people suggest dark chocolate chips. I may have to try that this weekend and feed them to my husband while dropping hints for Christmas presents.

Sorry it's been a month. Thanks for forgiving me.

And now on to fun things:
So, apparently every year since 1952 the New York Times chooses their favorite illustrated children's books of the year. I noticed this while browsing through one of my favorite bloggy stops ohdeedoh. I just love children's books. I love the stories, the lessons, the illustrations, the attention to detail, and the imprint they make on children. Being a new Auntie, I anxiously anticipate reading to both of my nephews all the classics - new and old. The illustration above was my favorite out of the bunch featured on the New York Times website. The book above is called The Snow Day, written and illustrated by Komako Sakai. I love the loose style of the rabbits and can't wait to find this at my local bookstore to see the other illustrations.

A while back I featured the above necklace in one of my '5 Friday Finds'. Well...have I mentioned I have an amazing sister in law? She snagged this fine piece up for me from Roundabout Design's Etsy store. I put it on the minute I opened the package, and haven't taken it off. It is the perfect amount of gold (and I'm not a 'gold' person, people) and it is dainty and feminine and fun. Thanks Tris for the amazing gift! And thanks Etsy for hosting amazing artists and designers for our benefit.

For 100 days Rachel Berger of the Yale School of Art randomly selected a paint chip out of a bag and wrote about it. I love how she lets herself be inspired by the chip...and her writings generally aren't about the 'color'. She's posted 40 of her favorite here.

Reading through these it definitely reminds me of a studio assignment from college...rightfully so...this is exactly that. But, I started wondering..."Why don't I create things like this for myself?". Instead of spending 1 hour a night searching Facebook and reading the latest celebrity gossip blog - what creative and new activity can I occupy and stretch my mind with? Or - is it that having a creative job causes you to just want to switch off the creativity when you leave? Does anyone else feel this way? Have you ever created an activity for yourself that feels like a studio assignment?

I usually don't get very many comments on this blog, but I am interested. I know many of my friends have freelance jobs that make them be creative after hours...but personally - I don't feel like that counts. What about being creative just for the hell of it? What about doing something for you rather than the financial gain? Any suggestions?

Ok...so you all know I love stupid braids...and I've been getting a lot of questions about how I do it. It's not rocket science, but it does take some practice. I searched online and found this tutorial. She does a great job of simply explaining (and not covering up the camera view while showing you). I do it pretty much exactly how she is doing it here, but during the french braiding I only add hair on the front side (face side) of the braid. But hers looks just lovely - and I think she's adorable.

Oh, Betsy, why are you so good at this??!! I remember, when I was in third grade my mom bought me a calligraphy set for my birthday - the pen, the paper, the book...and now I wish I actually practiced. I remember I took the kit out once or twice and was totally defeated by it, lost interest, and it remained tucked away in my craft drawer until it ended up in the trash.

Now I see amazing artists like Betsy Dunlap and it inspires me to really really want to be a calligrapher. She obviously mastered the original format and then infused her calligraphy with something of herself - and I think that's what I love about it. It is so inspiring when you meet people who have mastered a craft or an art and then put a personal twist on it. The style that really draws me in is her loose, beautiful organic script.
Her blog is so humble and fun and, if you pay attention, her work is everywhere - minted, in magazines, on Martha....and the list goes on.
Get it girl! You are amazing and talented and obviously a hard worker.

Uhhh....who wouldn't want to try these beverages? With descriptions such as: "this water is made from fruit and clouds" and "this water is coloured by nature" I would swipe these puppies off the shelf in an instant - too bad they are only found in the UK. I won't even knock them for misspelling the world 'colored'...their cute packaging makes up for that.

She is an American writer, blogger and decorator living in Germany and capturing little marvelous details during her explorations there. Sweet Flour bake shop, located in Toronto, is like a Cold Stone Creamery for your cookies. Seriously. You pick the dough...you pick the mix-in's and boom. Cookie in 2 minutes. They also have muffin tops, cookie sandwiches and granola...uh..yeah. I really really want to steal this idea and open one myself.

Their branding reminds me a little bit of these guys though, not a bad thing...just an observation.

If you remember, this past year was 'The Year of Beer' - sadly, the year of beer has come to a close. But, before we said goodbye to this wonderous year, we celebrated on the last day by visiting the amazing Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware. Ok. First. This place is amazing. The brewery really tells an amazing entrepreneurial story. It is inspiring to hear that people can follow their passions and, though it is never really 'easy', they make things happen - and stick to their guns.

With bigger brewing companies always nipping at their heels, Dogfish Head's creative culture is the key to their magnetic personality - and their one-of-a-kind recipes. They are a little "off-centered", as they say, which makes me love them even more. I was surprised at how much I truely enjoyed the tour, the story, the people...and the beer. If you're every in the Milton, Delaware area - go check out the Dogfish Head Brewery - it is definitely worth your time.

Here are my rec's: Dogfish Head Punkin Ale & the 60min IPA (and I'm not usually an IPA kinda gal). I would have loved to try the Fort ale, which is brewed with over a ton of raspberries.

5 friday finds: fall

I love fall. Who doesn't, really. The past few days have really gotten me ready for the crisp change of weather, preparing for the holidays, and that wonderful feeling of slipping into a light jacket. It seemed there were so many options when I was browsing Etsy this time. You should go browse yourself as well. These are a few of my choices for fall from Etsy.

1. Leather Cordovan Boots: These boots are fantastic. If they are really a size 7, I think I could swing it - wear a thick sock and I'd be set.
2. Acorn Earrings: Festive jewelry for the beginning of a new season.
3. Oak Nouveau Embroidered Hoop: A great gift for the fall or even good for bringing your home into the season.
4. Goldsboro Jacket: Oh goodness. I have drooled over the jackets Little Houses' store for over a year. This would be a fabulous addition to my closet.
5. Boston Beanies: And something for my nephews. I would get one the pumpkin and one the acorn.

The weekend ahead of us is filled with the prospects of good food, good people, good laughs, and a much needed break. We are leaving tomorrow to fly up to Maryland to visit my in-laws who have a place on the Eastern Shore. The images above and below are from a trip we made up there a couple of years ago.

It is always such a treat to take a few days, get on the water, and hear the wind push you along. Not only will we relax, but also my love's birthday is this weekend. I have a few things tucked up my sleeve, but mostly the celebration will surround good food and drink. That's how we like it...keep it simple...and keep the simple things good.

I hope you all enjoy the next few days as well! Take some time to kick your feet up and have a good meal...or two...or a few. :)

the pheonix commotion

The New York Times just posted a great article and slideshow about Dan Phillips and his construction company, Pheonix Commotion. His company is located north of Houston, TX and focuses on providing affordable housing by using recycled materials...basically trash. He employs a dedicated staff, but requires the eventual owner to pitch-in during the construction.

I was really inspired by some of the images that they featured. The flooring below is made out of used-wine corks.

The ceiling in this house was constructed out of frame corners from a local framing business that was getting rid of all of their samples.
I love the creativity shown in many of his projects.

sewing inspiration: naomi ito

Naomi Ito is a treasure to find. She is a designer for Kokka Fabrics, a fashion/pattern designer for home and clothing (including baby clothing), and she is an author. I have grown to love the delicate styles of Japanese fabric design, and she is a wonderful example of why. Her modern style & color, mixed with the traditional watercolor brush technique, creates such a new, yet, familiar look that is quite appealing to me.
Her website, naniIro, contains many patterns to download in pdf format. There are so many wonderful images on this website, it really makes you want to try them out.NaniIro's pattern book features projects that are simple - no zippers and hardly any buttons or other hardware to deal with. It would be a great way to start for a beginning sewer.
There's only one problem...they're all in Japanese. So, if you have a good friend who knows how to read Japanese...you might want to get in touch with them before getting knee-deep in one of these projects. Or, luckily, our friends at The Purl Bee have created a Japanese Pattern Drafting Tutorial that may be able to assist.
I have to admit...I have yet to try out any Japanese patterns yet, but with more and more practice on my English patterns, I'm becoming more confident that I can figure it out. I'll just start with muslin.

coleman's nook

Well - I finally sat down and went through some of the pictures of my nephew's nursery - and thought I would share with you how adorable it is. My sister and brother-in-law made this room fun, relaxing, and an eclectic mix of hand made objects. I helped them out with the bedding & some pillows, my father painted the comic-style painting above the crib, and everything else was carefully chosen to create a perfectly fun little boy's room. I'm sure Coleman is adores it.
They are both book worms - so Jen and Dan were intent on making sure they were stocked with all the necessary board books...you know...about cats in hats, caterpillars, butterflies, brown bears and of course...the moon.

I love the mix of patterns they chose. Such a fun way to work in color and pattern. The orange polka dots, mixed with aqua-blue and green trees with an organic cream to off-set all the business is just perfect.

They also did a great job infusing the room with lots of personal details. What you can't see in the pictures is that they have displayed many of Dan's old stuffed toys throughout the room, and some of the books on the shelf were theirs when they were little. Jen is a huge Charley Harper fan, I love how she framed the little birdie cards above the dresser.

Awesome job guys! I definitely think this should be a feature on sites like ohdeedoh.

And for those that are wondering...here's a glimpse of the little miracle that gets to live in this room:toes!

Tara Hogan is fuel behind the fire that is ink + wit. A modern, eco-inspired graphic designer with a passion for craft, Tara has created some beautiful prints...that I drool over often. I have made her website, blog, and etsy store a frequent morning stop. I recently purchased her 'Animal A-Z' Poster for my sister...and it's perfect.
I love her use of grays and mandarin yellows in this print.

I love her illustration style as shown in this Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary print. This print reminds me of Charlotte's Web - it would be cute in a child's room.

Ink + Wit also produces invitations, note cards, calendars, postcards....all very well done.

I just love this Bee House tea pot in Aqua Mist. Not that I really ever use teapots - I generally heat everything up in the microwave. All Bee House products (there are more...check them out here, or you can actually find some on amazon) are actually made in Japan by a company named Zero.

I have yet to try the chicharrones (deep fried pig skins) from 4505 Meat, basically because I've never been to San Francisco. But if they are worthy of the gloriousness that is Hatch Show Print press in Nashville, TN - they must be good.

I am no graphic designer, but I do appreciate the artistic authenticity that these hand-pulled posters exhibit, and love the color combinations - plus they crack me up. Each poster is not signed...but stamped with a thumbprint of lard. How hilarious. You can purchase one of these posters here...for a limited time I'm sure.

The past 12 months has been 'the year of beer' in our home. With a passion for good food & drink, my husband along with my brother-in-law have spent the last 12 months trying as many new beers as they can and rating them on their blog, The Year of Beer. What began as a little game, has now expanded into a hobby and on into a slight philosophy. Both my husband and brother-in-law now brew their own beer and are advocates of the craft-brew industry. If you are looking to broaden your horizons on beer in general, go check out their blog, they do a great job rating and reviewing different types.

I have said on multiple occasions that I think Starbucks should have a different paper cup for tea drinkers. These cups above are from Mallard Tea in the UK - aren't they quirky, modern, and adorable? Mallard is a specialty tea company that sells loose-leaf tea throughout their tea rooms in England. I would love to walk out of a tea room and stroll down the street or sit in a work meeting with one of these fabulous cups on my desk (especially the hounds-tooth one).

easy-start sewing: The Purl Bee

If you guys haven't checked out my list of suggested blogs on the right side of the page...then you have probably missed learning about The Purl Bee. The Purl Bee is an online journal of Purl, a shop devoted to beautiful crafting materials and supplies. I consistently check out The Purl Bee to find out how to do certain stitches I'm not sure of, or even to find a quick project that is easy, un-intimidating, and always turns out looking great.

One of their recent posts features an awesome tutorial for those that want to get into sewing but don't really know where to start. The Swaddling Blanket tutorial walks you step-by-step through a beginner level project that can easily be completed in the evening after work or in a couple of hours on the weekend.

Their tutorials always have great pictures to make sure your doing everything right, and they generally feature fabric combinations that are a little more modern and fun.

Not only does The Purl Bee do a great job of giving you tutorials to practice with, they update you on new designers, products, and give you tips and tricks of the trade.

Here are a few of my favorite features for the beginning sewer:

During my morning blog browsing...I came upon this picture here and it intrigued me. What I love is that I stared at this picture and wasn't sure whether I was looking at fruit or not. The little honey-combed nests that the fruit is settled into really transform the presentation. I'm not saying that we should wrap our fruit in paper in the states...all I'm saying is it's funny how a little switch can sometimes make things seem much more interesting.

Good morning beautiful! Looks like it's the beginning of another week, but for me...it's not just an ordinary week - my wonderful sister will be having her little boy this week! Yay! One of my addictions in the early fall has been the Mad Men series on AMC. The fashion, the historical accuracy, the early 60's furniture....not to mention the great writing and acting. Get psyched. Season 3 starts this Sunday. If you haven't seen the first 2 seasons, go watch them now, and you will be able to understand why I strongly recommend it.

Vanity Fair just released photos that Annie Leibovitz shot for their September issue. A-mazing. There are more beautiful images here, along with a great article by Bruce Handy. Ok...so this whole 'chickens in my backyard' trend is cool. I think it's kinda cool at least. But - just because I think it's neat that you can own an animal that will provide you with eggs, does not mean that I want to also "harvest" said animal for my Chicken Caesar Salad. I'm all about the possibility of someday owning 3 or 4 chickens for eggs...that's it.

There are so many organizations promoting urban chicken farming. Your city has to be "chicken friendly" with the adequate ordinances and zoning, but if you had the right spot - would you own chickens?

Of course, along with this interesting trend in backyard-chicken-raising...comes the ultimate in coops. That's right. Coops. Modern Coops is a company that created the coop featured in the above picture. The coop is constructed of recycled cedar and durable fiberglass - and the coop is mobile so you can provide your little chickies with fresh ground to eat and scratch at. Wonderful.

Another company, Omlet, has devised the perfect solution for the first-time, wanna-be, back-yard chicken owner....the eglu. When you work with Omlet to purchase your preferred coop, they will also ship you your chickens and feed to start with. The image below is their new model of the eglu that can hold up to 10 chickens.

This weekend we scoped out the NoDa district of Charlotte. This is an area starting to "turn" (as they say) and is a good spot for handmade goods, non-chain restaurants, and great people watching. We had made plans with a couple of friends to hit up the a-mazing Cabo Fish Taco for some dinner, then realized that we were going to be there during 'First Fridays' - which is NoDa's monthly gallery crawl night. Seeing that Cabo Fish Taco is deliciously popular (there was an 1:15 wait for a four-person table) we decided to peruse the local galleries while we waited for a table. Our first stop, and most notable one, was the Lark and Key Gallery & Boutique.
I immediately fell in love. First - the name...Lark & Key? I can't get over it, and wish I came up with it first. Second, the artwork. So wonderfully unique.
One of the artists that totally captured me was Duy Huynh. His acrylics have a very dream-like quality that I couldn't get over. This is one image of his work - but there were so many more that I would have loved to wrap up and take home with me. I didn't spend enough time in this boutique and I am already craving to go back for a visit...as well as craving more Cabo Fish Taco.

I just started getting into sewing about a year ago. I have never really taken a class...but I know I should. I tend to gloss over a lot of the details and "make things work" sometimes. Part of the process that I love - ok...love love love - is choosing the fabric. I generally shop on Etsy for fabric or I go to the fabric.com standard, which is great for basic cottons or other well-known designer fabrics (i.e. Amy Butler). I thought I would take this post and share with you some of my latest fabric obsessions.

As I started typing this post...I thought I would feature multiple designers, but as I began searching for images I realized - today I would just focus on one of my favorites: Heather Ross.
Heather is an author and artist. She creates beautiful textile designs and just recently released her first project book Weekend Sewing (which I own). It is a wonderful approach to guiding creatives through quick beginner projects that really shouldn't take but a couple of days - at the most.
I think the aspect that draws me in is her childlike drawings. They are so appealing to me. Little dogs and goldfish, mermaids and underwater animals, fairytale characters....

I struggle on Mondays - not because I have 5 more days ahead of me before I get to rest - but mostly because a lack of motivation to get back in the swing of things. Sometimes it just takes reminding me of what I love. Here are a few things you may also enjoy:

It's hard to step out on your own. Not that this is new news to anyone. But I have a lot of respect for those that do it, those that have done it, and those that have succeeded - also those that have failed and tried again, in my opinion that's the hardest. Being in the a creative field you have so many friends...or friends of friends....that try to 'start their own thing'. But being creative and running a business are two very opposite things. Something that is a passion...a hobby...a love...should that really become the very thing you depend upon for a living? I have always felt that at some point in my life I would do my own thing. What that will be? Who knows. When that will be? Who knows. But some of the people I admire the most have taken that step - probably scared to death at first - and made it work. These are the people that I want to feature in this post. My dear, courageous friends, and family, who are trying to make it work on their own.

Ok so this is something I honestly almost stole. I hate that. I love when I find things that I drool over - then I hate my inclination to try to imitate their craft. I happened across Ann Wood's fabulous creations via another one of my morning stops. She is an amazing crafter....er...craftess....er...whatever. Anyway - her owls make me swoon and want to pull out my fabric remnants and start creating. That is what I call inspiration.

I love her ship mobiles that she creates - how amazing would they be in a little boy's room? She also has an adorable hair cut and makes me want to quit my job and move to Brooklyn. Is that still considered inspiration? Hm.

So, here it is. I have forever had an interest in creating a blog...though never felt any self-motivation to actually attempt a scheduled posting ritual. Also - it has always kind of annoyed me how many people think that they are so creative, informed and witty that they need to create a hub of their knowledge. But look at me...the hypocrite...jumping on that "wagon". My self...has resolved with my self...that this will be more like a center of things that I have found either through my blog-voyages or through other media and creative communications. I will try to promote the people that inspire me, spread the word on products and ideas and ideals that are inspiring and challenging. I will try to keep it real...keep it fun. I will keep an open mind and try to post both sides of the story...and, along the way, hope that you guys hold me to that.
